Question

1. During chemical weathering, H2O and oxygen are removed or exchanged from minerals.

2. The force of gravity acting on an object can be broken into two components: Gp, the component that is perpendicular to the surface of the slope, and Gt, the component that is parallel to the surface of the slope

3. Would you expect wet soil to have the same angle of repose as dry soil? Why or why not?

4. Two internationally renowned rock-climbing areas are composed of limestone. El Chorro, in mainland Spain, has a dry climate with little precipitation. Tonsai, in Thailand, has a moist and hot climate. Which of these climbing areas is considered safer than the other? Use your knowledge of weathering to justify your response.

Explanation / Answer

1.chemical wathering is the process in which natural agents reacts with rocks chemically and broke them . its also called decomposition. rocks or minerals are more stable in their original or pure form . because their compounds are bounded togeather very tightly when water or wind or anty other gases react with rock or mineral chemically and exchanged some atoms with it that bond become weaker and rock has been broken. so we can say that in the chemical weathering H2O and oxygen are exchanged from the minerals and rocks . here is the example of carbonation, we can understand by it the chemical weathering process-

2KALSi3O8 +2H2CO3 H2O ---------> Al2Si2O5 (OH)4 + 2KHCO3 +4SiO2

2.  The force of gravity acting on an object can be broken into two components: Gp, the component that is perpendicular to the surface of the slope, and Gt, the component that is parallel to the surface of the slope

ans- true- gp is the perpendicular component of the gravity which helps us to stay at the place on other hand Gt is the other component which is parallel to the surface and moves us to slope direction.

3. angle between dip pr descent and horizontal plane is called angle of repose. it can be vary from 0 tp 90 degree. and wet soil having a large angle of repose than the dry soil. becaouse waterlogged soil have less gaps between the particels of the soil compare to dry soil . electrostatic attraction on the mineral surface will increase the angle of repose of wet soil on another hand , in dry soil not having electroststic attraction to surface so angle of repose will be lower than the wet soil.

4. chemical weathering process is increased in the hot and wet climate. and dry climate make rocks more stronger to the weathering. it will increase the process of dissolution of the limestone. so we can say that EL chorro in the spain is the safer place than the tonsai which having moist and hot climate'
