Question

Which of the following accurately describes the role of the Jet Stream in thunderstorm development?

It brings dry air into the mid-levels which is important to thunderstorm severity

It provides a mechanism for mass evacuation and uplift in the upper levels

It channels unstable air into the lowest levels of the atmosphere

All of the above

None of the above

A.

C.

It channels unstable air into the lowest levels of the atmosphere

D.

All of the above

E.

None of the above

Explanation / Answer

What are Jet Streams - Jet streams are the winds blowind above the atmosphere , these are also known as the river of winds and usually active at 11 kms into the atmosphere ( these river winds usualy blow between 20000 to 50000 feet). the Jet streams are not very wide but run long distances and have huge impact on the climate and they have the capcacity to push air masses and thus affecting the weather .

the wind which can be felt generates due to the temperature variation and the movement of air from high pressure areas to the low pressure areas , jet streams are formed as a result of the higher the temperature variation faster the winds will move to balance out the large difference . one of the main reason for the generation of the Jet Streams is the direction of Sun's rays as they are not evenly distributed on the earth , meaning thereby the polar regions receive very less sunlight as compared to the other areas , thus resulting the formation of very fast flowing winds ( sometime at the speed of 275 kmph) at the boundaries of these high temperature variations zones.

the following points thus accurately describes the role of Jet Streams in the thunderstorm development

d- All of the above

Jet streams are available both in the nothern hemisphere and sother hemisphere and are usually defines are Polar jet steams and subtropical jet steams and huge difference in the temperature between these zone leads to the formation of jet streams . thus the jet streams is one of the mail reason for the creation of the Thunderstorms and also leads to increasing the severity of the thunderstorms and as wind speed for these start from 150 kmph and can go up to 250 and sometime 275 kmph
