This is called the geologic time scale. The entire time scale was originally based on relative dating, since radiometric dating was not available at the time. Absolute dating techniques determine a numerical age of strata given in number of years. Relative dating techniques, on the other hand, determine the age of a stratu relative to other strata .e., if it is younger or older), without providing any numerical data. Geologists have been able to determine the relative ages of rocks and any fossils they contain to reconstruct a history that reveals the evolution of Earth's continents and liing organisms using four laws of stratigraphy . Law of Superpostion: Younger strata are deposited on top of older strata . Law of Orginal Horizontatty: Strata are deposited horizontally Tilted strata had been tilted by some geologic event ater the time of deposition . Law of Lateral Coxtinuty Layers of sediment initially extend laterally in all directions. As a resul, rocks that are otherwise similar, but are now separated by a valley or other erosional feature, can be assumed to be originally continuous . Law of Cross-Cutting Reiationshios Magma intrudes and crystallizes (forming features such as faults and dikes). These features are younger than the strata they cut throwgh because the strata they cut through must have been there before the intrusion of magma Part A- Laws of Stratigraphy The figure below shows a series of rock layers and a volcanic dike. Rock A is the oldest rock in the sequence. Use the laws of stratigraphy to rank items A-F O Type here to search e9 6-27 PM 3 12/2018

Explanation / Answer

According to the law of stratigraphy , the rank of item A-F are

older to younger it is ranked as - A-D - C - I - H - G - B -F-E

where A being the oldest and E being the youngest

A is the oldest as it is given , so D-C- I- H must have been deposited one after another which is explained by the law of superpositon ( younger strata deposited on top of older strata)

Through law of original horizantality we can say that the strata G is younger to all the tilted strata ( A-D-C-I-H) as tilted strata formed earlier and tiited by some tectonism and later horizontal G deposited.

Then B was depositd which is evident as it i so one top of G.( law of superposition)

Law of cross cutting relationship states that intrusion features ( dikes ) are younger to the feature that they cross cut. hence F is younger to STRATA ADCIHGB as it cuts all thees stratas.

finally E is the youngest strata as it is on top of the complete lithology and also not being cross cut by any lithology
