Question

This simplifies to infinity minus infinity. I cannot set both equations equal to a common denominator because they both are 1. The answer implies that these cancell eachother out. Can someone explain what happens when you have inifintym minus infinity? I am not looking for a process for the answer. I know how to get the answer. Someone please explain what happens when you minus inifinty minus infinity in this case. I know in other cases inifinty minus infinity does NOT equal zero.

Explanation / Answer

When you say infinity you do not what its value is... All you know is its bigger than the biggest. So, as you do not know what it is 'exactly' you cannot directly perform any operation. However, there are ways to deal with the concept of infinity.

The term "infinity minus infinity" is actually an indeterminate form, which can be generally eliminated by using logarithms.

I just want to give you a bit example

As what we know, 3 - 3 = 0
but is - = 0 ?

As what we know
+ 1 =
- = -1

+ 0 =
- = 0

So, - = -1 = 0, that's absurd.
from which we can conclude that infinty minus infinity is an indeterminate form, which can generally be eliminated by using logarithms and exponents
