How can you tell these are not the other type of crescent-shaped dune? b. C. The small dark specks in the photo below are vegetation. In what way does vegetation influence the formation of this type of dune? Draw the prevailing wind direction on the aerial photo below d. e. Dunes at White Sands, New Mexico Examine the curvature and steepness of the slope of the dune in Figure 18.16b, which is also in White Sands, New Mexico. What type of dune is this? _How can you tell?

Explanation / Answer

Answer 9.

a. The dunes shown in figure of white sands resembles longitudinal type of dunes. They are having straight morphology which depicts the prevailing wind direction.

b. These are not the type of crescent shaped dunes bevuabe crescent shaped as the name implies are semi-circular in shape. While if you observe the dunes in the figure carefully, they are all straight and must have been directed in the direction of wind. Therefore, I inferred it as longitudinal dune.

c. Vegetation have a great role in dune formation. For any dune formation there has to be a barrier which restricts the flow and motion of the sands. This role is played by vegetation. Vegetation catches the dunes and allows it to settle.

d. From the photo and assuming the North direction in upward direction of the photo, the prevailing wind direction must be in NE-SW direction.

e. The type of dune is longitudinal dune based on its morphology and sand deposition.
