Question

Conference Tables This problem gives you the chance to * tind and extend a number pattern in a practical geometric context . find and use a rule or formula The Conference Company supplies tables for conferences. Each table is a rectangle. Each table can seat one person at its short edge and two people at its long edge. The diagrams below show how these tables can be arranged for different numbers of people. No one sits inside the arrangements. Size 1 4 tables 12 people Size 2 6 tables 16 people Size 3 9 ablCS 1. How many tables are in a Size 3 arrangement? 2. How many tables are in a Size 7 arrangement? 3. Write down a rule or formula for working out how many tables there are when you know tables tables the size number. Explanation / Answer

3.

Looking at the size 1 and 2 and 3 arrangement we find that there is an increase of 2 tables as we move from one size to next size.

For Size 1 the number of tables = 4+2*0

For size 2 the number of tables = 4+2*1

For size 3 the number of tables = 4+2*2

Using this pattern we can say that for size n the number of tables would be = 4+2*(n-1)

7. Looking at the number of people who can sit in the given arrangements we find that for every increase in size there is an increase of 4 people .

For size 1 the number of people sitting = 12+4*0

For size 2 the number of people sitting = 12+4*1

For size 3 the number of people sitting = 12+4*2

Thus for size s the number of people sitting will be 12+4*(s-1) or 8+4*s
