Organic Matter Homework Your name Using the information you reviewed on Water Content, Organic Matter Content and Water Holding Capacity... calculate the following: 1. Following are some data for a peat. Calculate the percent organic matter content. Does this peat have a suitable to OM content to use in a USGA rootz one? Soil ld crucible wt cruc +peat cruc. + ash FarFard Peat 18.076 20.385 18.224 Show your work (you may use a calculator). Does this peat have a suitable to OM content to use in a USGA rootzone? (Answer here) 2. Consider the following data, Calculate the percent water holding capacity. Does this peat have a suitable water holding capacity to use in a USGA rootz one? Soil Id crucible wt. cruc. + saturated peat cruc. +dry peat FarFard Peat 19.111 37,672 24.767

Explanation / Answer

1) The calculation for organic matter content is quite easy.

Firstly,

We find the total organic content by adding the values given in row of farfard peat.

Total organic carbon(%) = 18.076+20.385+18.224

= 56.685

So, Organic matter content(%) = Organic carbon content × 1.72

Organic matter content (%) = 56.685× 1.72

= 97.4982%.

Part-2

Yes this peat has a suitable OM content to use in USGA rootzone, because USGA requires minimal of 85% OM content and here it is nearly 97%.

2) Water holding capacity= Saturated- Dry value.

=37.672-24.767

= 12.905%

This can be also used in USGA as there is a minimum concondition of 10% water content.
