Question

Based on data from the American Housing Survey, a hypothesis test is to be performed to see if there is

evidence of a difference in the proportion of occupied housing units in Hartford and Houston that are

owned. The null hypothesis is that the proportion of occupied housing units in Hartford that are

owned is the same as the proportion of occupied housing units in Houston that are owned. The

alternative hypothesis is that the proportion of occupied housing units in Hartford that are owned is

different than the proportion of occupied housing units in Houston that are owned.

Hartford: owner= 2260, total= 3284

Houston: owner= 1669, total= 2783

1. State your hypotheses.

The test will be conducted to see if there is evidence of a difference in proportions, using significance level. Clearly state, in words, what the null and alternative alpha =.05 hypotheses should be. Be as thorough as possible regarding the context – identify the two populations and the variable of interest as explicitly as you can.

2. How was data collected for the American Housing Survey?

First, state if the American Housing Survey is an experiment or an observational study. Then, explain how the data were collected. The American Housing Survey website will display that information – you’ll find it if you look around for a couple of minutes (look for the term “methodology”). Alternatively, if you Google https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/ahs/about/methodology.html

you can find it.

please type your answer like the word document and don't writting it by your hand. thanks

Explanation / Answer

(1) The hypothesis will be: H0: p1=p2 v/s H1 :p1?p2

where p1 and p2 are the proportion of occupied housing units in Hartford and proportion of occupied housing units in Houston respectively. Here, the test of proportion will conduct to see if there is evidence of a difference in proportions. and see the z-table at 5% level of significance(1.96). if the value of the test statistics is greater than the tabulated value of test then we reject the null hypothesis otherwise fail to reject the null hypothesis.

(2) American Housing Survey is an observational study. observational study means the study of the survey.
