Q1_Consider two sides of a mountain range:
(Windward side) AND ( Leeward side)
1-Which side do you expect to get the most precipitation during a mountain snowstorm and WHY?
2-Which side do you expect to get the least precipitation during a mountain snowstorms and WHY?
Q2_(West Coast/Pacific Storms) AND (Upslope Storms)
Describe similarities and differences between these two types of storms. Items to include in your description are what is the principal moisture supply for each of these storms. What mountains are most impacted by snowfall from these storms.
Explanation / Answer
The side with the most precipitation is the Windward side. Since the atmospheric air rises due to expansion of volume and low density, the temperature decreases and rises towards the windward side of the mountain. The precipitation increases due to the increase in moisture.
The side with the most precipitation is the Leeward side. Once the air reaches certain height they form clouds and due to condensation they start moving down and start losing precipitation and moisture. This will happen when this parcel of air starts moving towards leeward side.
