10.1.3 E Question Help If we find that there is a linear correlation between the concentration of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere and the global temperature, does that indicate that changes in the concentration of carbon dioxide cause changes in the global temperature? Choose the correct answer below ? A. Yes. The presence of a linear correlation between two variables implies that one of the variables is the cause ofthe other variable. O B. No. The presence of a linear correlation between two variables does not imply that one of the variables is the cause of the other variable Click to select your answer and then click Check Answer All parts showing Clear All

Explanation / Answer

A correlation only indicates that the values of 2 variables move in same/different direction. That is a positive corelation indicates that the if one variable increases the other also increases and a neagtive corelation indicates that if one increase, the other would decrease. But the correlation does not indicate that one is happening due to the change in the ohther. May be both are caused by a change in a third variable. For example let us consider 3 variables, amount of phone usage, battery drain and eye strain. Let us say an increase in the usage of phone increases the battery drain and eye strain. That is usage of phone causes battery drain and eye strain. We can also see that battery drain is correlated to eye strain, but battery drain has not caused eye strain (or vice versa) Correlation between 2 variables does not indicate causality.

ans: B. No, The presence of a linear correlation between 2 variables does not imply that one of the variables is the cause of the other.
