Question

A candle that is 17 inches tall is lit. As the candle burns, its height decreases at a rate of 0.2 inches per hour. Let tt represent the varying number of hours that have elapsed since the candle started burning. Write an expression to represent the varying value of the quantity described in each part. Each expression should be written in terms of the appropriate variable.

a.Write an expression (in terms of t) to represent the varying length of candle (in inches) that has burned since the candle started burning.

b.Write an expression (in terms of t) to represent the varying length of the candle (in inches) that remains since the candle started burning.

Explanation / Answer

a) Here, for the length of the candle, whether burned away or remaining, will be 'L'.

For this part we are trying to find out how much of the candle has burned. It is given that the candle burns 0.2 inches per hour. So the length of the candle that has been burned away since its start is give by:

  L=0.2t

b) We know from a) that the candle burns away at 0.2 inches/hour and its initial height is 17inches . So in order to find how much is remaining, we need to substract the amount burned(0.2t) from the initial height(17inches). This gives:

L=17-0.2t

Thank you and will appreciate if you can rate the answer.

Have a wonderful evening ahead!
