As Grant's distance (in miles) from the starting line increased from 1 to 4, what was the change in the number of minutes he had been running since starting the race? minute(s) Preview b. As Grant's distance from the starting line increased from 1 to 4 miles, what average speed (in miles per minute) did he run? t miles per minute Previevw c. 69 minutes after starting the race Grant passed mile marker 9. What average speed in miles per minute will Grant need to run, from mile marker 9 to the end of the race, to meet his goal to complete the 13.1 mile half-marathon in 110 minutes? miles per minutePreviewExplanation / Answer
Ans a
Time taken from 1 mile marker to 2 mile marker= 7 minutes and 45 seconds
Time taken from 2 mile marker to 4 mile marker= 19 minutes and 15 seconds
total traveled distance 4-1=3 miles
total time =73 minutes
so average speed =3mile/27minute=1/9 mile/minute
So we can assume for 1 mile also it was speed ,So time taken for first mile=distance/speed =1/(1/9)=9 minute
So time since race upto 4th mile marker=27+9 =36 minutes.
Ans b
from 1 to 4 mile average spped=total distance / total time
=3/27=1/9 miles /minute
Ans 3
Total race =13.1 Completed race =9 ( with 69 minutes)
Remaining race=4.1 mile
Total time scheduled for 13.1 mile =110 minutes
So distance 4.1 mile has to be finished in time=110-69=41 minutes
So average spped for remaining distance=distance /time = 4.1 mile /41 minute =0.1 mile/minute
