Week 12: Earth’s Resources Lab

Instructions: Examine the picture below. Then answer the questions.

Figure 1.

Question 1: When minerals (metals) are first mined from the Earth, what is their first stop in the manufacturing process? _____________________________________________________

Question 2: Even though it does not directly show in the figure, what crop is harvested on the farm to produce flour for bread? __________________________________________________

Question 3: Which two minerals make up pencil “lead” ? ____________________________

Question 4: What do you think happens at a refinery? _______________________________

Question 5: Look up (on the Internet) one of the metals (minerals) shown in Figure 1 and write down which state it is mined from. Provide the metal name and the state.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Now let’s turn out attention to some mining methods. Take a look at the following pictures and then answer the questions which are underneath each figure.

Figure 2.

Question 6: Which underground mining method requires the use of an elevator?

_________________________________________________________________________

Question 7: Are all of the methods shown in this picture underground techniques?

(yes or no)

Figure 3.

Question 8: Figure 3 is a (surface, subsurface) mine.    [ circle one ]

Question 9: If you were to guess what substance they are mining based on the colors that you see, would they be likely mining coal or copper?   _________________________________

Figure 4.

Question 10: This is called a strip mine. Why do you think they call it that? ___________

Pencil lead is a mixture of graphite and kaolinite (clay) Phosphate minerals Wood shaped with steel tools made from hematite or limonite (iron ores) with fluorite flux quarry Brass eraser holder made from sphalerite (zinc ore) and chalcopyrite (copper ore) Mineral powders as pigment in the enamel paint with feldspar FARMS PENCILS TO WRITE RECIPES FERTILIZER Rubber eraser hardened with sulfur solLWITH MINERAL CHEMICALS MINERALS NOCk Hematite Copper mine lron) mine GRAINS TO MAKE FLOUR ELECTRICAL WIRES, COMPONENTS, MACHINES Refinery BAKERY MACHINES TOOLS VEHICLES Sphalerite Zinc) mine BREAD TO STORES AND YOU

Explanation / Answer

1)

REFINERY = The refinery is the industrial process plant where it takes the ore from the mines or we can say that run of the mine then it removes the waste and gangue from the ore and make it more concentrated useful products for the final use.And in these refineries blending is also done , it means the output products of the refinery are the final product for the use as the raw material for the industries or for the individual.

2)

Wheat = Wheat crop is harvested on the farm to produce flour for bread and this is also uswed for making the biscuits.

3)

Graphite and Kaolinite = These are the minerals constitute the main lead of the pencil which is black in colour and used for writing, these minerals are mixed in fixed proportion such that if we wrote fron this it gives grey and black erasable marks. These minerals are resistant to the UV rays, moisture and most of the chemicals.

4)

The refinery is the industrial process plant where it takes the ore from the mines or we can say that run of the mine then it removes the waste and gangue from the ore and make it more concentrated useful products for the final use.And in these refineries blending is also done , it means the output products of the refinery are the final product for the use as the raw material for the industries or for the individual.

In the above figure it is shown that the mining output of the copper and the iron ore mine is feeded into the refineries with some lower grade value of the ores then in the refinery there is layered and stepwise refining and filterartion, separation of the mineral ia done from the waste, minerals is then send to the machinery, wire industries, from where the various machines such as vehicles, airconditioner etc is manufactured.
