Question

Chapter 5--Problem 20, For each of the following populations, would a score of X = 50 be considered a central score(near the middle of the distribution) or an extreme score (far out in the tail of the distribution)? A. u = 45 and a = 10 B. u = 40 and a = 2 C. u = 55 and a = 2 D. u = 60 and a = 20

Explanation / Answer

a) z(50) = (50 - 45) / 10 = .5 --> central score b) z(50) = (50 - 40) / 2 = 5 --> VERY far out c) z(50) = (50 - 55) / 2 = -2.5 --> far out d) z(50) = (50 - 60) / 20 = .5 --> central score Note: The factor that has the biggest impact here is the standarddeviation. A difference of one from the mean is nothing ifyour standard deviation is 10, but it is huge if your standarddeviation is .1.
