Question
In January 1986, 1000 adult residents of a community accepted aninvitation to be examined for asthma at a local clinic. Ten personswere found to have the disease; it was newly diagnosed in five andfive were already under treatment. The same group was examinedagain in January 1988. Twelve new cases of asthma were discoveredand, of these, two had developed symptoms several months before andhad been diagnosed and treated by their physicians. It was learnedthat of the ten asthmatic persons discovered at the 1986examination, one had discontinued medication and died in 1987; thedeath was attributed to asthma. Otherwise, all persons examined in1986 attended the second examination .a) What was the prevalence of asthma in the examined group inJanuary 1986 and in January 1988?
b) What was the incidence rate of asthma in the group?
c) What was the incidence rate of death from asthma in the group?
Explanation / Answer
Prevalence = percentage of population with condition 10 people with asthma / 1000 total people = 1% Incidence rate of new cases= new cases / total people (withoutcondition) at risk 5 people / (1000 total - 5 people who already have it) = .5% I'm not sure exactly what they are asking for here (the question isa bit ambiguous), but this is my best guess Incidence rate of death = 1 death / 10 people with asthma =10%.
