Question

1. 'Climate' and 'weather' are essentially synonymous and refer to the same thing

True or False?

2.According to the Executive Summary of the US Global Change Research Program (Week 12 required reading), natural cycles and variability (i.e., the Milankovitch Cycles) are the main causes of the warming trend we have seen in the last century

True or False?

3.According to the videos watched in class, the Earth benefits from Greenhouse Gases in the atmosphere, because without them the Earth would be too cold for humans

True or false?

Explanation / Answer

1) False

climate is the weather conditions such as temperature, air pressure, precipitation and winds  prevailing in a region over a long period of time. climate of a region mainly affected by latitude, elevation, nearby water bodies.

weather is the state of atmosphere described on the basis of wind, temperature, air pressure and cloudiness in a region at a particular time. weather changes with temperature humidity and air pressure between different places.

2) False

milankovitch cycle has an influence on the climate condition such as warming but now it is not the main cause of warming. the varations in the tilt of the axis, precesssion of axis and eccentricity affect the insolation rate. when the northern hemisphere tilted towards the sun earth will have a warm period, but now the warming on the earth is driven by the emission of CO2, and which play a key role in rising the atmospheric temperature.

3) True.

with out green house effect earth will be too cold, according to the equilibrium temperature of earth which do not consider the green house effect earths temperature is 255 K, so the presence of green house at a optimum value support the living beings to survive. these green house gases absorb the long wavelength radiation and act as a blanket which prevent the heat to flow outward.
