Question

1580 GT 38,000 GT Solid Earth (including rocks and fossil fuels) HUGE AMOUNT!! 1. The diagram above shows the reservoirs of the carbon cycle with the mass of carbon in Gigatons. Draw label lled arrows between the relevant reservoirs to represent the sinks and sources listed below: Volcanic eruptions (0.6 GT/year) Photosynthesis on land (110 GT/year) Leaf fall to soil (60 GT/year) Respiration from life on land (50 GT/year)Downwelling (mixing) from surface to deep ocean (96.2 GT/year) Respiration from soil (59.4 GT/year) Runoff of soil to surface ocean (0.6 GT/year) Dead ocean life sinking to deep ocean (10 GT/year) Dissolution of atmospheric carbon in surface ocean (90 GT/year) Release of carbon from surface ocean to atmosphere (90 GT/year) Uptake of carbon from surface ocean by ocean life (10 GT/year) Upwelling (mixing) from deep to surface ocean (105.6 GT/year) Deposition of sediment from deep ocean(0.6 GT/year)

Explanation / Answer

Review Question -

1st Atmosphere mainly had Helium and Hydrogen which were released into space forming 2nd Atmosphere. 2nd Atmosphere was back in the archean period which contained gases emitted from volcanic eruptions.Major gases as a result of volcanic eruptions were nitrogen , carbondioxide , ammonia , water vapour etc.

Most parts of carbondioxide then were dissolved in water to form carbonate sediments . Organisms found in 2nd atmosphere were mainly blue-green algae which constantly released oxygen as a result of photosynthesis.Carbondioxide further got reduced to a lot and now we have a conc of 0.03% of CO2 in atmosphere.

Few Questions from upper section though the diagram is not clear and also full content is not given-

2. Content of CO2 in atmosphere is constantly increasing because of the industrialisation and this is the reason the natural steady state of carbon cycle is affected and it is no more a in a uniform state.

3.Longest Reservoir is - In Lithosphere - caused by photosynthesis

Shortest Reservoir is - Surface RunOff

4.All parts included-

Carbon Cycle today has been interupted by human activities so the rate of CO2 is increasing everyday because of several other factors and its reservoir is large and long but with further advancement in technology and use of renewable source of energy this graph will reduce in the near future.
