Two international students were talking in the wake of theSingapore Air disaster a few years ago. The first student saidshe had been intending to fly Singapore Air for the semester break,but wasn’t going to now that there had been anaccident! The second said, “But it should be extra safenow. The chances of it crashing again so soon are verysmall.” If the likelihood of an airplane crashingfollows a Poisson distribution, what are these studentsforgetting about a Poisson randomvariable?   

1. The Poisson random variable is discrete.
2. The number of trials must be at least 30.
3. The outcome of each trial is one of two mutuallyexclusive categories.
4. The results of one trial are not dependent on the resultsof the other trials.
