Question
(17 pts) A study is planned to determine if a three month exercise program can increase endurance in elderly people. 24 people over 65 years of age from a senior citizens center were randomly selected. Each person was randomly assigned to either a muscle strengthening exercise program or a normal activity program for three months. The prestudy to poststudy 3. can walk in 5 minutes was recorded for all 24 people observational study? What data collection strategy was used? difference in the d (a) (8 pts) Is this an ex peri Explain your reason that functional ability often decreases with age, the study enrolled equai numbers in three age groups: 65-74, 75-84, and 85 or older. Then what data collection strategy would you suggest in this case? Explain your reason.Explanation / Answer
a) This is an experiment as we intend to study the effect of 3 months excercise program on 2 samples of individuals who were selected from the age group 65 + . Hence , the prestudy and poststudy of these individuals were done for the difference in the distance a person can walk in 5 mins .
If there is a signficant difference , then we can conclude that the improvement is statisitically signficant
b)
This time we have to select people randomly based on the 3 age groups we created. This ensures that we are covering the fact that functional disablility decreases with time.
Each group would be compared as a pre-post study group and the results would be more meaningful , as the statisitical signficane would be calculated for each group. This ensures that the right age group comparisons are made and statistically correct inferences are made
