Question
Suppose you are considering beach nourishment at two sites where the wave climate is the same but the sand sizes differ. Fine sand is located at Site A, and coarse sand at Site B.
(a) Consideration is being given to obtaining sand by dredging from a particular distance from shore (within 300 m). At which site would you believe this approach to be most appropriate? Explain your answer.
(b) Consideration is being given to dredging from a particular depth con- tour (withi n4 m). At which site would you believe this approach to be most appropriate? Explain your answer.
Explanation / Answer
(a) Beach nourishment most important criteria is the sediments grain size, appropritate grain size that is same size to the native sand is very important. So dredging of material within 300m of shore will bring more amount of finer particles this will match more with the Site B hence beach nourishment will be more effective and appropriate ate Site A than Site B.
(B) if dredging is within the 4 m depth then more of the coarser material will be produced and spread over the beach. So in this dredging method within 4 m depth will be most appropriate in site B as coarser native sand matches with dredged material.
