Question

7. Evans and Rosenthal state in Probability and Statistics on p. 37 that, "Mathematical probability theory was introduced to the English speaking world largely by two Ameri- can mathematicians, William Fell and Joe Doob, writing in the early 1950s. According to Professor Doob, the two of them had an argument about whether random variables should be called 'random variables' or 'chance variables.' They decided by flippinga coin and 'random variables' won." (Statistical Science 12 (1997), No. 4, page 307.) Which name do you think would have been a better choice and why? 8. Google 'German Tank Problem' and read about how the discrete uniform distribution was used to estimate the total number of tanks the Germans manufactured during World War II. Briefly describe how the discrete uniform distribution was applied. (Do not worry about the details of how the estimate was found - if you take STAT-402 next semester we will cover estimation problems.) Find the statistical estimates for the number of German tanks and the corresponding intelligence estimates (most website give these). Are you surprised by these results? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

7. The coin this time comes out to be my choice as well. I feel random variable is more apt than chance variable. A random variable is a type of measurement taken on the outcome of a random experiment. It is a process of assigning a number to every outcome of an experiment.

It gives a clear picture of its nature and is more dominating over chance variable.
