Question

Construction of 1-D (columnar) section of a sedimentary basin You will construct the infill of a hypothetical sedimentary basin by assembling a 1-ID columnar section of sedimentary rocks. In the two following labs you will use basin analysis software to test if your 1-D basin model generates hydrocarbons of economic significance. Your model should be as realistic as possible. Here are some guidelines: The columnar section must contain one hydrocarbon source rock, one reservoir and one seal, all labeled and at reasonable depth (check with literature) to produce and contain liquid hydrocarbons, respectively. Your model must contain 12 different units of sedimentary rock types in stratigraphic contact (no unconformities). The uppermost unit should crop out at the surface (0 m). The numerical age of the uppermost unit top should be 0 mya. Include a vertical meter scale and a chronostratigraphic scale. The different rock types should be evident from the columnar section by a characteristic fill pattern that is explained in a legend. Take care that the source rock is buried to sufficient depth so that it generates hydrocarbons today (oil window) and use realistic thicknesses for the different units of sedimentary rocks. In a separate table, provide for each of the twelve units » » . the numerical age and depth for the top and base, respectively, the thickness, the chronostratigraphy. Example of data required: silty shale; numerical age: 67 - 70 Ma; depth: 3500 - 3700 m; Unit 9: thickness: 200m; chronostratigraphy: Upper Cretaceous Keep the column and the table separate! Please note that without the completed assignment you will not be allowed to participate during the computer labs Basin Analysis # 1 (and #2)
