2.

The impact of climate change on freshwater reserves will be to

increase aridity in some areas and increase precipitation in others.

create water shortages worldwide.

increase precipitation in sub-Saharan Africa.

create surpluses of water worldwide.

reduce precipitation at high latitudes.

extend the natural altitude at which malaria occurs.

accentuate existing factors associated with malaria infections.

extend the natural latitudinal range of malaria.

have no impact on malaria infection rates.

increase the mortality rate of patients infected with malaria.

Explanation / Answer

1. Climate change will extend the natural altitude at which malaria occurs.

Reason : Malaria is already a problem at lower altitudes but studies now reveal that climate change such as increasing temperature, rainfall and humidity will eventually lead to a proliferation of the mosquitoes that carry malaria at even higher altitudes resulting in an increase in malaria transmission in areas where there was none.

2. The impact of climate change on freshwater reserves will be to create water shortages worldwide.

Reason : Only 2% of all the available water is freshwater and climate change results in increasing temperatures which melts the glaciers which is an important freshwater resource. Melting these polar ice into the sea turns freshwater into sea water thus leading to freshwater shortages worldwide.
