Question

Pretend you are attempting to piece together your family tree from the book of unlabeled photos described above, and answer two of the questions below. Then, for each question that you answer, describe a very similar problem that astronomers might encounter when attempting to identify stars. 1.You find two photos of young boys that look virtually identical. What evidence might help you determine if these two boys are identical twins, or two similar-looking brothers, or two baby pictures of a similar-looking father and son taken many years apart? 2.You find a photo of a large group of people posing for the camera. In the background is a sign that reads "Family Reunion 1917." What evidence might you see in the photo to help you determine how the people in the photo are related to each other? Give some characteristics (for example, physical features) you might see in some photos that would help you decide which people probably belong to the same branch of your family tree. Then, give some characteristics you might see that would NOT be helpful in grouping people into the correct families.

Explanation / Answer

1. Two boys looking identical in two photos can be simply inferred to be twins if the photos are of same time. If the photos are of some time difference, say 3-4 years then they would be similar looking brothers. In the same way astronomers relate the stars. Two similar looking stars with similar or identical physical features not too distant from each other can be inferred to be twin stars.

2. In a photo of a large group of people, their relationship can be inferred by their ages and physical similarities. In the same way astronomers can relate the stars through their ages size and similarities.
