QUESTION3 The next two questions relate to the following information. A randomised controlled trial involved offering 118 obese Australian adults dietary advice and a supplement. There were three treatment i. Standard low-calorie dietary advice and a placebo supplement (control) i. Low-calorie dietary advice emphasising fish and a placebo supplement (fish) ili Low-calorie dietary advice emphasising fish and a nutrient LCn3PUFA (fish+S). The participants mean change in body weight as a percentage of baseline body weight and 95% confidence intervals are shown in the figure below. The data is presented for each treatment group and as a total, which includes all participants. Note that the negative values for mean change in weight indicate all groups experienced weight loss on average 3 Months 12 Months Control Fish Fish+S Tota 0 -2 .4 .6 .8 8-10 12 -14 6

Explanation / Answer

Looking at the Confidence interval of the data we can see there is a huge difference in the confidence interval of first treatment group that is Control group.

While there is also a significant difference in the second treatment group that is Fish.

While there is a very little difference (negligible) difference in third group.

Overall there is Significant difference in the confidence interval of weight loss.

The Confidence intervals span different values and so there is a difference in the mean weight loss of the different treatment groups.
