Question

The National Safety Council reported that 54 percent of American turnpike drivers are men. A sample of 400 cars traveling southbound on the New Jersey Turnpike yesterday revealed that 240 were driven by men. At the .02 significance level, can we conclude that a different proportion of men were driving on the New Jersey Turnpike than the national statistics indicate?

a. State the null and alternate hypotheses

b. Determine the test statistic

c. Determine the critical value.

d. Complete the test and make your conclusions.   (Do you reject the null hypothesis and on what basis?)

Explanation / Answer

a) Ho : = 0.54 (There is no evidence to state that a large proportion of men were driving on New Jersey Turnpike than the national Statistics indicate.)
Versus
Hi : > 0.54 (There is an evidence to state that a large proportion of men were driving on New Jersey Turnpike than the national Statistics indicate.)

b) Test statistic = t(240/400) = (0.6-0.54)/sqrt[0.54*0.46/400] = 2.364

c) Critical value for right tail test with alpha=2% = 2.053

d) Reject Ho: (yes or no)
Since the p-value is greater less than 2%, fail to reject Ho.
