Question
Urgent/ Easy question and points! Need help explaining this answer!! Can someone explain why the answer is 10-11 years for Part A? I understand everything else (part b - d). Any help would be appreciated!
The question for part A reads: Three-quarters of the species in this graph had already spent at least roughly BLANK years in the petition stage before a lawsuit was filed.
The answer is 10-11 years but I really don't get why
Problem 3 (9 points) 12 min The 1973 Endangered Species Act (ESA) is a law protecting species at risk of extinction. However, the process can be rather lengthy, requiring first that a species be petitioned before it can even be officially considered for protection. A recent study examined all species receiving ESA protection since 1973. The modified boxplot on the right describes the 547 species that were involved in a lawsuit, splitting the overall time spent in petition into a time before and a time after the lawsuit. 30 20 a) Three quarters of the species in this graph had already spent at least roughly 10-11 years in the petition stage before a lawsuit was filed b) For the species on this graph, the median time spent in petition after a lawsuit was filed is roughly 2-3 years. 10 c) The distribution of time spent in petition after a lawsuit was filed for these species is A) right-skewed, no outliers C) left-skewed, no outliers E) symmetric, no outliers B) right-skewed with outliers D) left-skewed with outliers F) symmetric with outliers d) Can we conclude that filing a lawsuit helps shorten the time a species spends in the petition stage? Briefly explain why or why not. No, we can't. [Either one of the following two explanations is sufficient for credit.] The time spent after a lawsuit is obviously shorter than the time spent before it, but we don't know how long the petition process takes without a lawsuit (so how would we know if it is shorter?). Also, the data are not an experiment, therefore we cannot conclude causation. Before AfterExplanation / Answer
interpretation of box-plot
lower boundry of the box is first or lower quartile (Q1) and upper limit of the box is upper Quaritle (Q3)
if X is random variable then P(X<Q1)=0.25 and P(X<Q3)=0.75.
form the given boxplot of before the first quartile Q1 is 10-11 years so
here in question P(X is at-least 10-11 years)=P(X>10-11 years)=1-P(X<10-11 years)=1-P(X<Q1)=1-0.25=0.75
so three quarters or 75% of species already spent 10-11 years.
