WINTER STORM IN NORTH AMERICA
On January 3rd, 2018 in Northern America apowerful winter storm called a "bomb cyclone" caused severe disruption along the East Coast of the United States and Canada. [1, 2]. It dumped snow and ice in places that rarely receive wintry precipitation. Even in winter, places such as Florida and Georgia produced snowfall accumulations of over 2 feet (61 cm) [1]. The storm originated on January 3 as an area of low pressure off the coast of the Southeast [1]. The intensity of storm increased as it moved swiftly to the northeast, parallel to the Eastern Seaboard, causing significant snowfall [1]. The various unofficial names given to the storm are as Winter Storm Grayson, Blizzard of 2018 and Storm Brody [1]. It was also referred to as historic “bomb cyclone” [1].
The storm led to travel chaos with thousands of canceled flights and dangerous roads [2]. Warnings were issued to the coastal areas from Norfolk, Virginia all the way up to Maine [1]. Several states, including North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts were declared with states of emergency [1]. Overall, 22 people were confirmed to have been killed due to the storm, and at least 300,000 residents in the United States lost power in total [1].
For this year overall, the world is 0.5 degrees Celsius warmer than average (due to climate change!). But parts of the East Coast of the United States are 10 degrees below normal [3]. Science studies and models report that the outbreak of arctic air bringing freezing temperatures to the lower United States is consistent with the climate disruption expected on a warming planet where the Arctic heats up faster and cold air is displaced to the south [4]. Occurrence of such storms is one of the side effects of climate changes happening on our planet due to rapid development and industrialization.
