Question
Residing in southern California we are very mindful (or should be) of our water resources. We must always keep in mind the severe drought conditions recently experienced and while last years El Nino brought much needed precipitation this will only act as a temporary fix. In the not too distant future, due to our population size, water use, and climate change we will be right back in a similar position.
For this discussion I would like you to watch the following video and then follow the prompt below:
Now that you have a general idea of groundwater visit the Water Education Site (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. for southern California. Utilizing this site, the preceding video and any other reputable resource (i.e. www.usgs.gov (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.) to develop a post on your thoughts related to groundwater. If by chance you live outside of southern California you may focus your post on your local region.
Explanation / Answer
Surveys have shown that an average California household utilises between one-half and one acre-foot of water. With the proliferation of human population, the depleting fresh water availability and ever changing climate we need alternate methods to harness water for consumption. Thus, ground water is a good alternative of procuring water for use from beneath the earth's surface in cracks of rock formations or retained between the soil pore spaces. It makes for 20% of the world's fresh water supply. It is a long-term reservoir of natural water cycle. An aquifer is a layer of water-bearing permeable rock, rock fractures or unconsolidated materials such as stones, fine gravel, silt etc. which yields usable water. This water can be tapped by constructing wells/bore wells and is safer, cheaper and less polluted as compared to surface water and can be used as public water supply. Ground water is replenished by rain, streams and rivers and is an important resource especially during droughts. In places like southern California and others' that face water scarcity using groundwater is one of the best alternatives to overcome our ever growing need for fresh water.
