Question

"Taking the long view on your education, you go to the PrestigeCorporation and ask what you should do in college to be hired whenyou graduate. The personnel director replies that you will be hiredonly if you major in mathematics or computer science, geta B average or better, and take accounting. You do, in fact, becomea math major, get a B+ average, and take accounting. You return toPrestige Corporation, make a formal application, and are turneddown. Did the personnel director lie to you?"

I was not sure on how to approach this problem or what resultswould tell that the personnel director lie to you or not. Ahint on how to proceed this problem would be nice but an answer tocheck my work would be great. Thanks.

Explanation / Answer

He didn't lie. The key phrase is "only if," which is used inconverse of "if." "you will be hired only if you major in mathematics orcomputer science, get a B average or better, and take accounting"means that IF you are hired, it means that you have B average orbetter. In other words, the prerequisite for being hired isthat you have B average or better and take accounting. Thedirector does not mean its converse.
