Explanation / Answer

Bulk density - I

Reason : On severe compaction, the bulk density is increased because soil particles are pressed together and the volume of pore spaces between the particles is reduced greatly. Thus, the weight of soil in a given volume increases.

Particle density - I

Reason : Particle density may be defined as the mass per unit volume of the solid soil particles without any pore spaces. With severe compaction, the pore spaces decreases, resulting in an increase in the number of solid particles in a given volume of soil which means increased particle density.

Infiltration rate - D

Reason : Compaction of soil affects the movement of air and water through the soil. With increasing compaction, the pore space size change ls and water infiltration rate into the soil decreases while the surface runoff increases.

Texture - N

Reason : Soil texture is basically the percentage of sand, silt and clay and compaction does not affect the texture of a soil much. Since the bulk density of a soil increases with increasing compaction, the texture will also shift from very fine grained to fine grained to coarse grained.

Air or macro porosity - D

Reason : When a loam soil is severely compacted, the volume of the large and small pore spaces in the soil is also reduced, leading to an increase in the bulk density. Higher bulk density is an indicator of lower porosity and so the air or macro porosity decreases because the large pores (macropores) essential for air and water movement in soil are decreased.

Total porosity - D

Reason : Compaction reduces the total porosity because the total porosity is calculated as-

Total porosity = 100 - (Bulk density /Particle density * 100)

Since the bulk density and the particle density both increases, the total porosity will obviously decrease due to compaction.
