(4) INTERIORS

Say we discover two new planets -- Sram and Noom. They are both believed to have a core of rock surrounded by a mantle of ice. They are the same size but Sram has a mean density of 1500 kg/m^3 and Noom has a density of 2600 kg/m^3.

(3 pts.) (a) Which has the thinner mantle of ice? Explain why.

(3 pts.) (b) Which is expected to have greater radioactivity heating the interior? Explain why.

(3 pts.) (c) Yrucrem has the same mean density as Sram but Yrucrem has a radius twice that of Sram. Which planet will have cooled faster?

(4 pts.) (d) What would be the evidence that you would look for on the surfaces of Sram and Yrucrem to confirm your hypothesis of which planet had cooled first?

Explanation / Answer

The mean density of Sram is 1500 kg/m3 while the mean density of Noom is 2600 kg/m3.

(a) Since the formula of density is mass per unit volume and hence we can say that Noom has more mass present in unit volume therefore we can say that it has thinner mantle of ice as density of ice is less.

(b) The volume of ice present in Noom is less which means that it contains more radioactive heat which is heating the planet and that is why we have less volume of ice at Noom.

(c) Since heat transfer is a surface phenomenon which means that more the surface area more would be the heat lost by the planet and since the radius of Yrucrem is twice of Sram therefore we can say that Yrucrem will cool faster as compared to smaller Sram.

(d) We'll be looking for the craters on the surface of the planets and the planet which cooled first will have more craters as after the solidification of the planet if any meteorite hits the plante then it will form crater as the planet is solid in nature on the surface.
