Question

? 25) Milankovisch theory holds that Earth experiences regular climate change as a result of changes in all of the following EXCEPT A) the position of the solar system in the galaxy B) the tilt of the spin axis C) the elliptical orbit of Earth around the sun D) the wobble (or precession) or the spin axis. E) all of the above. 26) A series of stakes are driven imo the ice at the head of a one kilometer long valley glacier that is moving at a typical speed for a glacier. Twenty years later the stakes will A) still be at the head of the glacier, about where hey were befoee B) be at the head of the glacier, but covered by tens of meters of ice. C) have moved about 100 meters down the glacier. D) have moved almost to the end of the glacier. E) be gone; they will have moved completely through the glacier. 27) Which of the following is an unläkely contributor to the Ice Ages on Earth A) Milankovitch orbital changes B) an increase in the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere. C) the positions of the coetinents in northerly latitades D) the patterns of flow in the ocean currents E) cooling of Earths climate. 28) The principal ages of glaciation on Earth are A) late Precambrian, late Paleogoic, late Mesozoic and late Cenozoic. B) late Precambrian, early Paleozoic, early Mesozoic, and late Cenozoic. C) late Precambrian, late Paleozoie, and late Cenozoic. D) only in the late Cenozoic E) spaced at regular intervals throughout geologic time. 29) Which statement best describes the major controlling factor(s) nocessary for the formation of a glacier? A) increase precipitation B) more fresh snow accunsulates than is lost by melting C) a change in climate D) low temperatures E) high mountains and cold temperatures 30) The southern limit of the continental ice sheet in the U.S. is marked by the present location of the A) Mississippi River B) St. Lawrence River. C) Missouri and Ohio Rivers. D) Great Lakes E) Gulf of Mexico.

Explanation / Answer

25. Right answer is A.

Milankovitch cycle accounts for three factors – Eccentricity, Axial tilt, and precession of axes and tells us how these three are related to cycles of glacial and non – glacial periods in Earth. The position of solar system on galaxy although may affect climate change on earth, but it is not as important as other factors are, that is why not included in Milankovitch theory.

26. Right answer B.

I am not sure, but I think the right option is B because glacier moves very slowly , so the stakes will be at the head of the glacier, but ice will continuously fall and cover them.

27. right answer is B.

Milankovitch cycle describes how variation in eccentricity, axial tilt and precession of the axes cause periodic glacial and interglacial cycles in earth, the position of continents in northern latitudes and the pattern of flow in ocean current can also be responsible for ice age. But an increase in carbon dioxide of atmosphere (CO2 being a green house gas) warms the climate, a global rise in global temperature, thus certainly not a contributor in ice age formation.

28. Right answer is C.

There have been five known major ice ages in earth’s history - Huronian, Cryogenian (Late Proterozoic), Andean-Saharan (Paleozoic), Karoo (Late Paleozoic) and Quaternary (Late Cenozoic).

29. right answer is B.

Increase in precipitation, change in climate, low temperatures, high mountains and cold temperatures all these factors are important in snow generation, but a glacier is formed only where enough snow accumulates and stay all year round, so more fresh snow must accumulate than is lost by melting.

30. Right answer is D.
