Question

One approach to mitigating the impacts of climate change in cities is to increase the amount of park land and open space, such as golf courses. Consider this quote from an editorial: “What good is a golf course? More than most people think. Turf on golf courses substantially reduces runoff in urban and suburban settings; a 150-acre golf facility can recharge the water table with millions of gallons of rainwater and snow melt each year; and a golf course has the cooling effect of several hundred tons of air conditioning.” Use either energy or water budget considerations to explain why each of these claims is plausible. (Assume the golf course is in an urban area.)

Explanation / Answer

We know that the need of the current world is to go for sustainable development. Sustainable development means that the resources should be used in a justified manner so that to conserve them such that the future generations can have an access over them. One of the main resource that is required for the development and for the sustainance of human being is water that too fresh wateand inspite of majority of earth being covered with water (quantitative this amount to 70% of the earth surface) we are facing water sortage in almost all the places are the world. This is because more than 96 percent of this water is in ocean and it is saline in nature and hence we can’t use it for drinking purposes and other useful resources. Now we are left with less than 4% of which about 1.5 percent is locked in glaciers and another 1.5 percent is present in ground water which we can use for drinking and just above 0.5 percent is present in the form of freshwater. And this irony is responsible of the water crises that we are facing these day as we have water but around 98% of that water is either non potable or inaccessible to the human being.

Now in order to overcome this problem there are many remedies one such remedy is to go for afforestation and to increase the amount of park land and open space, such as golf courses this is because the turf on golf courses will decrease the amount of evapotranspiration that will take place from the soil if it not covered with turf apart from this the turf also protect the top layer from erosion thus will maintian the compaction of the soil and protect its erosion. Turf also increase the infiltration of soil that will take place during the rainfall as the turf decreases the speed of water's run off thus giving more time to water for its infiltration and this will increase the water level to a great extent.
