Question

A research team is studying a new pain medication for patients suffering from fibromyalgia. Patients suffering from chronic pain as a result of fibromyalgia were divided into two categories: Treatment and Placebo. Patients in the treatment group were injected with the new drug while patients in the placebo group were injected with saline solution. Neither the patients, nor the health care practitioners administering the study knew who was receiving the actual drug.

After two weeks the patients were asked to pick which category (1-no pain, 2- almost no pain, 3-occasional mild pain,  4-occasional moderate pain, 5-occasional severe pain, 7-constant mild pain, 8-constant moderate pain, 9-constant severe pain, 10-intense unabated pain) their pain abatement fit into.

Based on the experimental design of this study and the kind of data generated, which statistical test should be used to determine if pain relief category was independent of treatment group?

A. Two-sample t-test

ANOVA

Chi Squared Test

Paired t-test

Linear Regression with t-test for significance of slope

F. One-sample t-test

Here is a link to the data set collected by the researchers containing patient responses concerning the level of pain relief they experienced over the course of the study.

Perform the correct statistical test to determine the P value. Report your answer rounded to four decimal places.

Use formulas, functions, and the data analysis tool pack in Excel to avoid accruing rounding errors. Useful functions include

=t.test(array1,array2,tails,type)

to produce a P value for any type of a t test from a data set

=chidist(x,degrees of freedom)

to produce a P value from a calculated chi squared statistic

-ANOVA Single Factor from the data analysis tool pack

to perform a 1-way ANOVA on a data set with only one factor

-ANOVA 2-Factor from the data analysis tool pack

to perform an ANOVA on data with multiple treatments

-Regression from the data analysis tool pack

to perform a linear regression and the corresponding t-test on the slope of the line

I need Help picking the correct test for the p-value! I believe I am doing a two-sample t-test but I could be wrong with that too! IDK please help

Explanation / Answer

You should be doing a Chi-Squared Test of independence.

The variables that you are dealing with (pain category and treatment group) are both categorical variables. When we want to test whether 2 categorical variables are independent or not, we always go for the Chi Squared Test.

Accordingly, use the corresponding Excel formula to compute the p-value of the above-mentioned test.
