mark whether the problem relates to a DISCRETE or to a CONTINUOUS 14. For each of the questions below, mark whether the problem relates to a D thly demand for purchase of industrial furnace boilers at a large plumbing DISCRETE a. In September, mo CONTINUOUS answer meau of 7 boilers with a standard deviation of 2 boilers. Tlie t cost of $2.225 per boiler plus a fee of S500 per month to act as a are sold for $2.850 each, what is the probability that, over dealer for these boiluse will make an average monthly profit of at least $4,200? warehouse pays a unit cost of S2.225 per bo If boilers months, the warehouse wi the uext three 15 customers who order beer, exactly seven of them will order light beer? b. Typically, 40% or US, beer drinkers order light beer. What is theprobabilitythat oft ene t DISCRETE CONTINUOUS DISCRETE High-strength concrete is supposed to have a compressive strength greater than 6,000 pounds per square inch (psi). A certain type of concrete has a mean compressive strength of 7,000 pi but due to variability in the mixing process has a standard deviatiou of 420 psi. Assuning a thata gave apurofconcrete from this mixture normal distribution, what is the probability that a given pour of concrete from this mixture will fail to mecet the high-streugth criterion? CONTINUOExplanation / Answer
Answer :
(a) : In This case the profit is the random variable that we need to model and as we know it can take any value from the set of real numbers, there is no finite range out of which the profit can take any value, it is totally based on the sales of the boilers. Thus as it doenot contain finite values, It can be best modeled as CONTINOUS variable.
(b) : In this question we are given that 40% people orders light beers, thus probability of ordering light beer will be 40/100, here the randon variable has only two distict values, one is: whether a light beer is ordered and the second is : Light beer not ordered. Thus there are finite number of choices that the random variable can take hence, it is related to the DISCRETE variable case.
(c) : As the distribution of the compressive strength for the concrete is normal, which is a continous distribution but here we are given a pour of this concrete thus as per its normal distribution it can take any value for the compressive strength, thus to odel this variable we can take it as a CONTINOUS varibale. and for the question here we need to calculate its probability of taking values greater than 6000 pounds.
Discrete variables has a finite countable set of values that they can take, whereas in case of continous variables it can take any value out of its infinite possible range.
