Question

8) One of Mendel's famous experiments with peas resulted in600 peas. Mendel claimed that under the same conditions 259 of offspring peas Mendel's claim of 25% is true, and assume the sample consists of 5 famous experiments with peas resulted in 500 offspring, and 3 of them were yellow too would be yellow. Assume that 00 offspring peas. a) Use the range rule of thumb to identify the limits separating values that are significantly low and those that are significantly high, Based on these results, is the result of 135 peas either significantly low or high? Explain 0.05 b) Find the probability of getting 135 or more yellow peas? (use statcrunch for this one) . as

Explanation / Answer

a) here expected number of yellow peas=np=500*0.25=125

and std deviation=sqrt(np(1-p))=9.68

therefore minimum usual value =mean-2*Std deviation =125-2*9.68=105.64

maximum  usual value =mean+2*Std deviation =125+2*9.68=144.36

as 135 is inside the range of usual values ; result of 135 peas is neither significantly low or high

b)

P(X>=135)=P(Z>(134.5-125)/9.68)=P(Z>0.98)=0.1635
