Question
1) Suppose that among 10,000 men with HIV-negative, 200 will develop a disease within 2 months; and among 500 men with HIV-positive, 35 will develop a disease within 2 months. A researcher is doing research on T-cell count dips. She aims to perform antiretroviral therapy for 1000 patients and analyze the results with an average cost of $300 per patient.
(a) Calculate the relative risk and interpret your result.
(b) Calculate the odds ratio and interpret your result.
(c) Considering your results from (a) and (b), would you suggest to invest in this project?
(d)Suppose X is normally distributed with mean ? = 1.73 and standard deviation ? = 0.95. Use the standard normal Table to determine:
a) P(X < 1.26);
b) P(X > 0.5);
c) P(|X-?| > 0.76);
d) P(|X-?| < 0.76) :
Explanation / Answer
a) Relative risk = Disease if exposed/ DIsease if not exposed =(35/500)/(200/10000) = 0.07/ 0.02 = 3.5
If person is exposed to HIV, there is a 3.5 times chance of getting the disease than if it is not exposed.
b) Odds ratio = 35/465 / (200/9800) = 35*9800/(465*200)=3.6881
c) It is advised not to invest in the project as odds ratio between exposed and non exposed should be approximately 10 to make it investment worthy.
