A. Short answer
1. The age of the Earth is 4.5 billion years old
2. The radius of the Earth is 3959 miles
3. The age of the universe is 14 billion years old
B. Match the name
1 Aristotle - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Earth orbits Sun
2 Galileo------------------------------Sun orbits Earth
3 Newton--------------------------------Gravity
4 Karl popper------------------------------Falsification
5 The red sea------------------------------- Crust is spreading apart
6 Himalayan mountains----------------------------Continents collided
7 Hubble---------------------------------------------------- Redder spectra = further objects
8 Wegner--------------------------------------------------- Continents once together
C. True or False
1. True, at 66 million years ago, there are evidences which tells us that this extinction is because of asteroid impact, or volcanic eruption ( deccan traps).
2. True, according to some scientists, the meteorite hits the Earth which is evidenced through that iridium content is higher in the meteorite, but almost negligible in earth, but still if we are high iridium content in the Earth it means meteorite impact.
3. True, the first 10 to 20 million years were very hot because at that time there was no crust formed. Hence there was only volcanic eruption were occurred in that period then slowly slowly Lava cools and formed the crust.
4. False, the innermost layer is made up of Fe and Ni
5. ?
6. True, it is formed by the pacific plate moved relative to north American plate.
7. True, By adding the water in the mantle through the suducting plate, lowers the melting temperature of the mantle rocks causes the partial melting of the rocks and the magma will rise form volcanoes
8. True, Himalayan mountains are formed because of Collison of Indian plate and Eurasian plate.
9. False, when air heated up then it expands.
10. True, the andes mountains are formed on subduction zone where oceanic crust subducted under south American plate.
E. Short answer
1. The interior of earth contains some radioactive elements like uranium which are decaying and releasing the heat in the interior. Other reason gravitational compression of crustal sediments which can absorb heat get trapped in the interior which increases the heat.
2. When the substance heated it expands but density decreases. For example let's take the air, when air heated the volume of air molecules expands and density decreases and hence become lighter and moves upward in the atmosphere. Another example is Ice.
3. Density affects the weight of the substance, when density increases ( heavy) then weight increases and hence it moves to lower level than other which is lighter.
4. when the substance cooled, it is shrink and hence volume decreases and density increases because when it cools, weight increases.
5. Convection occurs in the Earths interior. When the fluid in the interior heated, it become less denser and rise toward the crust, but when it comes near to the crust the temperature decreases and it become denser which makes it move downward. This way convection happens.
6.the other forms are conduction and radiation. When heat transferred from core to the crust is by conduction and when heat is added in to the Earth by terrestrial radiation like sun, it is called as radiation.
