Question

Hi all I am having problems with this:
The Queen Mary sailed between England & the US andsometimes stowaways were found on board. The following table liststhe ages of for the two sets, one for the eastbound crossing andone for the westbound crossing.
Compare the two sets usingappropriate statistical measures.

EASTBOUND   24 24 34 15 19 22 18 20 20 17
WESTBOUND 41 24 32 26 39 45 24 21 22 21

How can anyone figure this out? Can anyone please show me how?

Explanation / Answer

Step1(nothing to slove, just state this):   Ho: U1=U2    Ha: U1 does not euqal U2
Step 2: Take the average of each set and label themxbar1 and xbar 2. Find the standard deviation of both sets andlabel them s1 and s2. note* you can use either x2-x1 or x1-x2 but usually you wantto use the one that gives a positive number. If you use x2-x1 and the value is positive, you are claiming that x2 islarger(if it was x1-x2 and the value was positive, then you claimthat x1 is larger). SE = square root of(s1squared/n1 +s2squared 2) T= (xbar2-xbar1)/SE
Step3: Since you are not given a confidence level(like95% or .05) you must use a P-value
your degree of freedom(d.f.) is your samplesize(10) -1 = 9 so look on your t-chart and use the row with d.f.of 9 for the rest of this step. So, A<T<B, where A = the value on thet-chart that is to the left of where your T value would be and B =the value on the t-chart that is to the right of where your T valuewould be(just leave T as the letter T). Your answer would be the (probability ofB<P <probability of A). This is a bit confusing soI will give an example: If your degrees offreedom is 9(which it is) and your T value was 3 then A=2.821 andB=3.250. Since this is a two sided test, the probability ofA= .02 while prob of B= .01
