Question
Why are the examples in the text so difficult tounderstand?Find the five-number summary for the given data byhand. The weights (in pounds) of 18 randomly selected adults aregiven below. 120 146 187 153 119 138 127 140 179 162 182 202 114 174 133 152 170 174 I think the max is 202 the min is 114. I don't understand how to get the Q3 and Q1 as well asthe median. Why are the examples in the text so difficult tounderstand?
Find the five-number summary for the given data byhand.
Explanation / Answer
The 5-number summary is: Min:114 Q1: 133 Med: 152.5 Q3:174 Max:202 So good job, you got the max and min right. The Q1 and Q3 are the"first" and "third" quartile, so another way to see Q1 is the "25thperctile" and Q3 as the "75th Percentile". In addition, the mediancan also be understood as the "50th percintle" or the MIDDLE of thedata. The easiest way to find them BY HAND* is to write the numbersout in numerical ascending order:: 114, 119, 120, 127, 133, 138, 140, 146, 152, 153, 162, 170, 174,174, 179, 182, 187, 202 Now because we know there are 18 given values, the MEDIAN or MIDDLEof the data will be between the 9th number and 10th number, whichis 152 and 153. Thus the median is 152.5. If the number of given values is odd, then you do not have to goinbetween values like we did here because there is no "middle"value. Now, because we know that the data is split 9 values to the leftand 9 values to the right, to find the Q1 we find the "middle" ofthe first half, so count to the 5th number: 133. This is Q1. Likewise, if we count 5 digist from the very end, we will find the"middle" of the second half of the data, which is 174. Things to be careful when doing this is watching for repeats, youMUST include all repeats. Hope this helps.
