Question

REFERENCE: Determining sample size(mean) Q. population IQ scores are randomly distributed with a meanof 100 and a standard deviation of 15. A survey is to be done onthe IQ scores of students who are majoring in computer studies.what should be the sample size of the survey if we want a 90%confidence level and a maximum error of estimate of 41.Q.points. Explanation / Answer

I am going to interpret the maximum error of estimate, E,to be 4. (It appears to be typed as 41). then we know that   E = Zc /n ,   where Zc = critical valueof Z = 1.645 for 90% confidence interval (this means that =0.05 in each tail of the normal distribution curve). We are given that = 15. Solving for n algebraically, we get   n =(Zc / E)2   = [(1.645)(15) / 4]2 = (6.16875)2 = 38.05 or 38 students
