Because the bodies of men differ in some ways fom the bodiesof women. These difference can have an effect on the result of thetest. Therefore they made two groups

People who have never smoked are the healthiest, so you shouldmake sure you belong to that group. Therefore you shouldn'tsmoke.
From the other groups the ones who didn't quit are thehealthiest. So if you smoke, you should make sure you belong to thegroup which didn't quit smoking.
