Question

Owing to several major ocean oil spills by tank vessels, Congress passed the 1990 Oil Production Act, which requires all tankers to be designed with thicker hulls. Further improvements in the structural design of a tank vessel have been proposed since then, each with the objective of reducing the likelihood of an oil spill and decreasing the amount of outflow in the event of a hull puncture. Identify some quantitative and qualitative variables that could be collected for studying the above problem. (adapted from [De Veaux et al. 2006])

Explanation / Answer

Some qualitative variables could include the various types of materials used to make the hulls and other variables that are not numerical answers. There are probably more quantitative variables, such as the number of ship hull punctures by year, the thickness of the hulls, the size of the cargo in tonnage (tons), the size of the various oil spills, the speed at which the tanker was movin g when the hull broke, and the geographic location of the damage (this last one could also be quantitative dependign on how u look at it.) The quantitative variables can be studied using numerical statistics, like tests of porbability and proportion.
