Question

Lab9.CoastalGeology Twyla C O file:///Users/twyla/Downloads/Lab9CoastalGeology.pdf a t ide level During the storms of late fall and winter, the summer berm crodes and the sand is transported offshore, sometimes forming a sand bar (labeled "Longshore Bar" in the figure above). So in the winter the berm narrows and retreats toward the sea cliff. When the smaller waves of summer retum, they carry the sand from the bar back onto the shore, rebuilding the beach and causing the berm to grow outward away from the sea cliff The figure below is from a long-term study of sand movement at a beach near Carmel, California. It shows surveys of the progressive growth and retreat of the berm from the dates 4/21/46 to 2/21/47 Each line in the figure corresponds to the date when the beach profile was measured (it might help to trace each line in a different color to make the profiles more distinct). 6 Growth 4-14-48 2-21.47 Fetreat -0-46 50 100 OFFSHORE (METERS) Lab 9 Questions 1. Based on the figure above, between April 21, 1946 and July 29, 1946 (ie., during the spring and summer), did the retrcat, grow, or remain the same? (2 pts.) 2. Between September 4, 1946 and February 21, 1947 ie., during the fall and winter), did the berm: retreat, grow, or remain the same?(2 pts.) 3. Between September 4, 1946 and February 21, 1947, did the slope of the beach just below the berm become gentler, steeper, or remain the same during that time?( pt.) E-OCIO3 Page 3 of 4 Lab A9

Explanation / Answer

1. During summer the berm grow by smaller waves of summer.

2. During fall and winter the berm narrows and retreats towards the sea cliff.

3. It is becoming steeper due to increse in vertical height.
