Question

Rank the following data in increasing order and find the positions and values of both the 22nd percentile and 65th
percentile. Please show all of your work.

A bag of colored blocks contains the following assortment of colors:
red (22), blue (10), orange (1), purple (16), green (20), and yellow (11).

Construct the probability distribution for x.

Assume that the average annual salary for a worker in the United States is $38,000 and that the annual salaries for Americans are normally distributed with a standard deviation equal to $7,000. Find the following:

(A) What percentage of Americans earn below $25,000?
(B) What percentage of Americans earn above $46,000?

Please show all of your work.

Explanation / Answer

don't remember how to do the 1st problem

2nd problem:
when adding up all the colors, you get a total of:
22+10+1+16+20+11 = 80
You then need to find the percentage for each color
red= 22/80 = 27.5%
blue= 10/80 = 8%
orange= 1/80 = 1.25%
purple=16/80 = 20%
green= 20/80 = 25%
yellow= 11/80 = 13.75%
Now you just need to make a probability histogram with heights of the blocks according to the above percentage. the x-axis should be labeled "colored blocks" and the y-axis should be labeled "percentage per colored block"

problem 3:
Given: average salary = $38000 and SD= $7000

the equation we want to use is: z = (what you want to know - average)/SD to convert into standard units

a) z = (25000 - 38000)/7000 = -1.857
we know want to know the area under -1.857 on the normal curve. This area is equal to 3.215%

b) z = (46000-38000)/7000 = 1.143
we want to know the area above 1.143 on the normal curve. This area is about 12.505%
