Question

A researcher wishes to compare the efficacy of a new treatment with that of the standard treatment in reducing bone fracture in patients with osteoporosis. Suppose that a proportion pS =30% of patients respond to the standard treatment, and that the investigator will switch to the new treatment only if an additional 15% of non-responders will respond to the new treatment. What is the value of PN (the proportion responding to the new treatment) that corresponds to a clinically important difference, as defined by the investigator?

Explanation / Answer

I'm assuming this is just asking for the basic value. So 30% pass originally. We want to add 15% of non responders or .15*.7. So .3+.15*.7=0.405.
