Question
I am having trouble deciding/understand which signficance level ( .1 or .01) to apply to the following problem in part B. I think I did part A correct.Suppose that you are an inspector for the Fish and Game Deparment and that you given the task of determining whether to prohibit fishing along part of the Oregeon coast. You will close an area to fishing if it determined that fish in that region have an unacceptable high mercury content.
5ppm is considered the maximum safe concentration.
Part A. I choose the following hpothesis to test: Ho: mean = 5 versus Ha: mean <5
Part B. Choose the significance level .1 or .01 for your test?
Thanks
Explanation / Answer
Since the study is for the health of public, and it is highly dangerous to stay in the areas where mercury content is high, we need to consider the test. if the significance level is high, the confidence of the result will reduce. since, the test is of high priority, significance level must be low. therefore, must be 0.01 generally, we can take any value for between 0 and 1, but based on the requirement of the confidence of results, we need to choose appropriate significance level.Related Questions
