Question
Examine the timeline above.
k) Make a general conclusion as to when the next Cascadia earthquake might strike.
Picture is the Cascadia Earthquake Timeline
Application:
Summarize your findings about subduction zone earthquakes and compare them to explain the damage and loss of life. Would earthquakes generated on the Cascadia Subduction trench be as destructive?
CASCADIA EARTHQUAKE TIME LINE EVENTS IN HUMAN HISTORY YEARS BC 8 2000 YEAIRS AD KNOWN CASCADIA EARTHQUAKES ALONG THE CASCADIA SUBDUCTION ZONE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, OREGON, AND WASHINGTON YOU ARE HERE! Earthquake of Magnitude9+ (fault breaks along entire subduction zone) ? Earthquake of Magnitude 8+/fault breaks along southern half of subduction zone) Comparison of the history of subduction zone earthquakes along the Cascadia Subduction Zone in northern California, Oregon, and Washington, with events from human history. Ages of earthquakes are derived from study and dating of submarine landslides triggered by the earthquakes. Earthquake data provided by Chris Goldfinger, Oregon State University: time line by lan P. Madin, DOGAMIExplanation / Answer
it is difficult to predict the exact time of earthquake in future but we can make general statement on it on the basis of past earthquakes and its periodicity. from this time line, we can estimate that the earthquakes of magnitude 9+ has long time gap, because it take more time to stress accumulation. earthquake of 8+ has occured with nearly every 500 years, but 9+ has occured after 500,600 or 700 years for most cases, so in 2200 we can expect a 9+ magnitude earthquake and 8+ magnitude soon.
subduction zone earthquakes are the deep and strong earthquake, when the denser older plate subduct to the mantle, it forms a bending region of earthquake known as wadati-benioff zone, so this high magnitude earthquakes are always destructive, and mainly did by the surface waves the Rayleigh and Love waves causes the destruction of structures. the periodicity of the earthquake depends on how fast the plates move and the rate of stress accumulation and elastic parameters of the plates.
