Question

***NEED HELP WITH THE FACTOR OF SAFETY****

You have been assigned as the project manager for a job. The project is to build a modern limited-access highway through a series of potentially problematic geologic units and environments. The highway is to be 100 ft wide, and is to be constructed along the line on the diagram marked grade (So, you will have to excavate the topography to the grade line). Examine the geologic information provided and use the cross section below to write your report on the road design that you will provide as a recommendation to the civil engineer in your firm.

Explanation / Answer

the area selected for the high way is geologically active, and all of them are threat to this constructions. in the case of earthquakes the recurrence interval is 975 and 935years, from this data chance for an earthquake in near future is very less. starting feom the west, the shale unit dip around 20 degrees and limestone is 60 degree to south these area can occur a sliding of the blocks when saturate with water, in the rainy seasons. when cut through these layers the fractures formed can be greater threat by water perculation, so proper cementation is needed in this area. faults are the one of the major threat to any constructions, because the basement itself will goes up or down, in this case water will perculate through the fault plane and reduce the friction between two blocks and tend to have slide across the plane, it can cause the minor earthquakes and the highway will collapse. granite layers are are probably safe, there will not be any water perculation if there is no any considerable fractures, so the water will flow above the layer and proper drainage is needed to divert the water flow so that it will not affect the roads. swamp is also a dangerous region, because when heavy weight exerts it can cause subsidence over this region.
